WatchA large structure fire on Denman Island has destroyed a building and forced the evacuation of a nearby school.

Students and staff were evacuated from Denman Community School on Tuesday due to fire across the street.

Mary Lee, communications manager for the Comox Valley School District, said the fire broke out at a business site across from the school. The school was downwind from the fire and the Denman Island fire department recommended evacuation.

The students were taken by bus to an old school site adjacent to the fire hall. Students were dismissed. Parents and guardians then picked up the students.

Denman Island Fire Chief Don Luckett said firefighters were called to the fire just after 12 p.m. Crews and equipment from Hornby Island and Fanny Bay were also used to fight the fire.

The flames did spread to the trees but Luckett said firefighters were able to supress it.

Lee said the school was not damaged in the fire. District maintenance staff have been asked to shut off the HVAC system to mitigate any air quality concerns within the school.

The warehouse that was on fire was extensively damaged. It was up for sale.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.

BC RCMP has confirmed fire crews have been called out for a fire but RCMP has only been contacted to assist.
