One person was sent to hospital after a single-vehicle crash in north Nanaimo.

A Buick sedan with two people inside crashed into a lamp standard on Hammond Bay Road near Uplands Drive at around 6 a.m. Sunday, according to Sgt. Chris Manseau, media relations officer with the BC RCMP.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services attended the scene. Video submitted to CHEK News shows multiple firefighters around a badly damaged Buick.

Manseau said one of the individuals inside the vehicle was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries.

It isn’t clear what caused the accident or whether drugs or alcohol may have been a factor and Manseau said the investigation is early and ongoing.

BC RCMP are asking any witnesses who may have seen a Buick sedan driving in the north Nanaimo area to contact to them immediately at 778-290-3791.
