A handful of emergency shelters are opening throughout the city of Victoria as B.C.’s south coast braces for an icy chill.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for parts of Vancouver Island, warning of snow.

Temperatures hit a -1 C low on Wednesday night, prompting the city to initiate their Extreme Weather Protocol. The move opens up more shelter spaces than usual.

Tonight, there are 472 spaces in 19 shelters, where people in need can find a warm place to sleep. For current shelter information click here.

Next week, Environment Canada is predicting even cooler temperatures, and calling for the possibility of more snow.
