
Across Vancouver Island and the province, several communities are offering free BC Transit rides on New Year’s Eve.
Along with the free transit rides, the operating hours will be extended on New Year’s.
Victoria, Nanaimo, and Port Alberni will be offering the free rides on the Island, and elsewhere across the province, the Central Fraser Valley, Kamloops, Kitimat, Prince George, Revelstoke, South Okanagan-Similkameen, and Sunshine Coast will either do the same or have adjusted hours.
In Victoria, free rides will begin at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31.

Free transit in Nanaimo will start at 8 p.m., and service will extend to 2:30 a.m.
Port Alberni will become free at 7:30 p.m. and service is extended until 1:30 a.m.
Transit adjustments in other areas are as below:
- Central Fraser Valley – extended evening service
- Kamloops – Extended evening service on certain routes. Free service starting at 6 p.m.
- Prince George – Extended evening service until 3 a.m. on certain routes. Free service starting at 7 p.m.
- Revelstoke – Extended evening service until 2 a.m. Free service starting at 6 p.m.
- South Okanagan-Similkameen – Free New Year’s Eve shuttle (Penticton)
- Sunshine Coast – Free service after 7 p.m.
Then on Jan. 1, Sunday service will be in effect in Victoria, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Central Fraser Valley, Kamloops, South Okanagan-Similkameen, and Sunshine Coast.
There will be no service on Jan. 1 in Prince George.

On Dec. 29, BC Transit updated that Kitmat will no longer be able to offer extended service. The story has been updated to reflect this.
