Highway 19A reopens north of Courtenay after serious two-vehicle crash

WATCH: Traffic is flowing again on Highway 19A after a serious crash closed a stretch of the road for several hours earlier. The head-on collision happened near Black Creek around 1 p.m. Dean Stoltz reports. 

A serious head-on collision closed Highway 19A in both directions near Black Creek for a couple of hours on Tuesday afternoon and sent three people to hospital.

The crash, which involved two vehicles, occurred south of Hamm Road just before 1 p.m. The Oyster River Department, BC Ambulance and RCMP responded to the collision.

RCMP said three people were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Two dogs were taken to a veterinarian.

According to RCMP, officers were doing traffic checks not far away when a driver alerted them to a vehicle that was driving unsafe. Police said while they were trying to catch up to the vehicle, they saw a puff of smoke as the vehicle hit another car.

The highway reopened at 3:30 p.m.
