Security guard released from hospital after being stabbed in Ladysmith

Police combed over a forested area south of Nanaimo after an incident witnesses allege was a stabbing sent one person to hospital, March 15, 2023.

A security guard in Ladysmith has been released from the hospital after being stabbed while checking an open fire on private forestry land.

After the guard checked on the fire, an altercation occurred between a suspect and the security guard, and the security guard was allegedly assaulted and stabbed.

On March 15, just before 12 p.m., Ladysmith RCMP was called to the area of Cameron and Timberland roads after receiving a report that a security guard was assaulted.

The security guard was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

BC Emergency Health Services confirmed paramedics were called to the Timberlands Road site around noon Wednesday, dispatching two ambulances and a supervisor to transport one patient to hospital. The patient’s injuries and current condition were not disclosed.

WorkSafeBC also confirmed that it was “aware” of a workplace incident in the same area, but declined to provide further details until a more detailed inspection report became available. The organization added that a WorkSafeBC officer is currently working with the employer, who it declined to identify.

The suspect was identified as a 66-year-old man from Nanaimo and was arrested the next day.

He was released on an undertaking and is set to appear in court in Duncan on May 16.
