Galloping Goose reopens after police investigation wraps up

Saanich Police closed a section of the Galloping Goose on March 12, 2024 for an investigation by the Major Crimes Unit.

Saanich police say the Galloping Goose Trail between Grange Road and McKenzie Avenue has reopened after an earlier closure.

The Saanich Police Major Crime Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding a male who presented himself at a local hospital with a gunshot wound, according to police in an update around 6:15 p.m. Monday.

“His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Investigators believe the victim was targeted and that there is no risk to the public,” said police.

The section of the trail was closed from 6:30 p.m. on March 11 to 11:45 a.m. on March 12 while Major Crimes investigated with the assistance of K9 units.

On March 26, police confirmed that the incident where the man was injured occurred on a private property, the incident is isolated and there is no risk to the public.

The search continued in the morning, as the lack of daylight hindered the investigation overnight.

“At daybreak, with the support of the Greater Victoria Public Safety Unit, a thorough search and canvas of the area was conducted. That has now concluded,” a news release from Saanich Police says. “Going forward, we will provide more information on this file as needed.”

A CHEK News reporter on scene says there are police officers walking through the closed section with what appears to be metal detectors.

There are at least eight police officers searching, with around 10 officers on scene, according to the CHEK reporter.

The Greater Victoria Public Safety Unit is also on scene.

The Greater Victoria School District says classes are unaffected at Spectrum Community School and Marigold Elementary School. The principal of nearby St. Joseph’s Elementary School also says there are no changes at that school.

Saanich police say detectives continue to investigate, including the connection of the shooting to the District of Saanich.

This is a developing story, more details will be added as they become available.
