Saanich police say a 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital Monday morning after a hit-and-run crash near the intersection of McKenzie Avenue and Shelbourne Street.

Police said just before 7 a.m., a driver in a blue Dodge Caravan, heading east on McKenzie Avenue, struck a grey Yamaha scooter and a grey Honda Civic that were both going west on McKenzie.

According to police, after hitting the vehicles, the 25-year-old male driver of the Caravan continued east then struck a telephone pole at the intersection of Larchwood Drive. Police said the driver then abandoned the van and fled on foot down Larchwood Drive and onto Teakwood Road. Police found him a short time later.

He was arrested and is being investigated for impaired driving offences.

A 20-year-old woman who was driving the scooter was taken to hospital in critical condition. The driver of the Honda Civic suffered minor injuries and did not need to go to hospital.

Saanich police collision analysts are at the scene and a part of the intersection is closed while they investigate. Drivers should expect delays and consider taking an alternate route.
