Campbell River Search and Rescue (SAR) is reminding hikers to bring a communication device with them after they were called out to Strathcona Provincial Park Sunday night.

In the morning, crews went out by helicopter to search the valley and the trail.

Campbell River SAR said the hikers eventually walked out of the trail late Monday afternoon and the search was called off.

Campbell River SAR said the hikers did inform someone where they were going and when they were planning to come back. They were also prepared to stay overnight and were willing to travel slowly to avoid injuries. Their family did call 911 when the hikers didn’t arrive at the agreed time.

However, Campbell River SAR said if the hikers had an inReach device, they could send a text message indicating they were fine but were running late.

Campbell River SAR is also recommending hikers add extra time to their plans when they will be travelling on the coast or where trail is overgrown.
