The RCMP have confirmed a plane crash near Smithers Saturday has resulted in at least one fatality.

Officials can only confirm the crash was fatal, and cannot specify any further as the investigation is in its early stages.

Police say they are working with the B.C. Coroners Service and Transport Canada.

The B.C. Ambulance Service says they met with rescue crews at the airport in Smithers and took one patient to hospital. They believe they were in stable condition

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre received an emergency notification around 8:45 a.m. from an emergency locator transmitter that was registered to a Cessna 182 approximately 50-nautical miles north of Smithers Landing.

Search and Rescue crews from CFB Comox were sent to the incident.

A helicopter from Canadian Helicopters out of Smithers was dispatched following the incident and located the crash site.

A Cormorant helicopter and Buffalo fixed-wing aircraft from 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron were sent out.

Search and rescue technicians were able to make their way down to the crash site.

JRCC says details about the persons on board and their condition are not available and that Royal Canadian Air Force assets have completed their mission and the case has been turned over to the RCMP.
