A 17-year-old Saanich student has set five new Canadian records in powerlifting and nine new B.C. records after back-to-back competitions this month.
Tate Commandeur swept the sub-junior (under 19) 105-kilogram weight class at the Western Canada Powerlifting Championships in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on March 9 — breaking the four provincial records he’d set in November 2023.
One of those new provincial records is a mammoth squat of 272.5 kilos or almost 600 lbs., which beat his previous record by 22 kilos.
The Lambrick Park Secondary grade 12 student, who is the son of CHEK’s Tess van Straaten, also set a national bench press record in Moose Jaw, lifting an impressive 183 kilos or 403 lbs.
That’s 25 kilos more than the provincial record Commandeur set in November, just a few weeks after his 17th birthday.
Commandeur’s other new provincial records in the sub-junior 105-kilogram weight class include a 267.5 kilo or 590 lbs. deadlift and a total lifted amount of 723 kilos or 1591 lbs. — which was almost 50 kilos more than the November record the teen set.
At the BCPA Provincial Championships in Burnaby on March 15, Commandeur competed in the weight class above his and set three new Canadian records and five new B.C. records.
In addition to the provincial records in the sub-junior 120-kilogram weight class for squat, bench, bench only, deadlift and total lifted, Commandeur set new Canadian records for both bench press and bench only (180.5 kilos or 398 lbs.) and total lifted (705.5 kilos or 1,555 lbs.).
Commandeur was also awarded the ‘Best Lifter’ award at the provincial championships in sub-junior, beating out teenagers in every other weight class to become the strongest teen in B.C.
The former AAA baseball player has been asked to join Team Canada to compete at the world championships in Malta at the end of August.
