Saanich school workers strike to continue Wednesday

School workers in Saanich began the strike on Oct. 28, 2019.

Students will remain home Wednesday as the Saanich school support workers strike stretches into its second week.

Educational assistants, custodians, bus drivers and other support staff represented by CUPE Local 441 started picketing at Saanich School District schools on Oct. 28. Teachers have not crossed the picket lines so classes have been cancelled since then.

CUPE 441 President Dean Coates said the Saanich School District and the union were at the bargaining table all day Tuesday.

However, there is no word on how talks are going or if they are close to a deal.

The main issue is wage parity. Support staff are paid less in the Saanich School District than they are in neighbouring districts such as Greater Victoria and Sooke.

The district continues to post updates on its website here.
