A 35-year-old Saanich faces charges including Assaulting a Peace Officer and Uttering Threats following an incident in Gyro Park on Tuesday.
Police say they received a report of a intoxicated man yelling at people in the park at around 2 p.m.
The first officer arrived and started talking to the man.
Police say he then became confrontational and punched the officer, and continued to kick him while he called for backup.
Other officers from Saanich and Oak Bay arrived to take the man into custody.
Saanich Police say the officer is recovering from his injuries and will be forced to miss work under doctor’s orders.
The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
