Saanich police say parents should be on the lookout after a possibly intoxicated man repeatedly asked a young girl for help looking for his dog.

Investigators say it happened Monday night at around 5:15 p.m. The girl, 14, was walking on Queenswood Drive at MacDonald Drive West when a vehicle described as a black four-door in poor condition, with rear windows smashed out, pulled up and asked for help.

He continued to do so until the girl ran away. The driver was last seen quickly driving away from the scene, “possibly swerving eastbound on Queenswood Drive,” said police.

The driver is described as a 30-year-old white man who was wearing a black toque and black face mask with a puffy jacket. The man’s clothes were described as being dirty, and there were “large amounts” of cans and bottles in the car, police said.

“While this appears to be an  isolated incident, we are taking this matter seriously and looking for any information that may help identify either the suspect or the vehicle involved,” Saanich police said in a statement.

“We commend this young person for  being suspicious of the suspect, quickly leaving the area and for immediately notifying her  parents.”

The driver has not yet been tracked down. Anyone with information is asked to call Saanich police at 250-475-4321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
