Police are investigating a report of a sexual assault on the University of Victoria campus and says it is not believed the survivor and suspect knew one another.

The sexual assault is reported to have happened around 1 a.m. in the wooded area near Cluster 60 Housing.

Const. Markus Anastasiades with Saanich Police says the investigation is early, but it is not believed at this time the survivor knew the suspect.

“This is a very sensitive file and we are working closely with the survivor by providing support,” Anastasiades said in an email to CHEK News.

UVic’s Campus security says it will be closely monitoring the area near Cluster 60 Housing.

“Campus Security patrols all parts of campus—including student residences—24 hours a day and will be closely monitoring the area of the reported assault,” security says in a notice on its website. “UVic is committed to the safety, well-being and support of all members of the campus community. Support is available.”

Campus security highlights the following support resources:

Off campus resources include the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre at 250-383-3232, and Island Health has resources and information available on its website.
