Two people are facing drug-related charges in Saanich.

According to Saanich Police, an officer was parked on the side of the around on April 30 at approximately 2 a.m. when a passing vehicle swerved and nearly struck the police car.

The officer, suspecting that the driver might be impaired, followed and ultimately pulled the vehicle over in the 3400 block of Douglas Street.

Saanich Police say that when the officer was speaking to the driver of the vehicle, a small package of drugs could be seen “in plain sight.”

The driver was then arrested, and the vehicle was searched, which resulted in the seizure of drugs believed to be fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine, according to police. Drug packing material was also discovered.

Furthermore, the driver failed a roadside sobriety test, resulting in a 24-hour driving suspension and vehicle impound.

Both the driver and passenger are facing charges related to drug trafficking and the possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The arrest comes less than a month after Saanich Police say they stopped another vehicle in the same area following a weapons complaint.

According to police, at 8 p.m. on April 2, they pulled over a vehicle and discovered “several drugs” that are believed to be methamphetamine and cocaine, along with $1,000 in cash. Police say the drugs were “packaged” and ready for street sale.

The driver in that incident is facing charges related to drug trafficking and driving while prohibited.

“The details of both files indicate that they were out actively selling drugs.” said Const. Markus Anastasiades in a press release. “It’s a good day for police when we are able to stop the trafficking of drugs, especially when it comes to the seizure of fentanyl, as we are all aware of the devastation this drug has caused in our province.”
