Correction: An earlier version of this story reported that the man was found to be in possession of an airsoft gun. Police have clarified that the man was not in possession of any firearm, airsoft or otherwise. They have also clarified that they were called at 10:30 p.m., not 2 a.m. as originally reported.

A man was apprehended by Saanich PD after a seven-hour overnight standoff on Valewood Trail.

Police say they received a call around 10:30 p.m. about a man walking on a property in the area with what was believed to have been a firearm.

When officers arrived, they say the man — who lives on the property — didn’t want to cooperate with police as they attempted to negotiate with the man and perform an arrest.

The occupants of the home on the property were evacuated, according to police. They say the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team was eventually called and the Integrated K-9 Section was able to apprehend the man at around 9 a.m.

The man was injured by the police dog and B.C.’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office, opened an investigation into his injuries.

The investigation is still ongoing and the IIO is asking anyone with information to contact their witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or via the iiobc.ca website.
