The District of Saanich is offering BC Housing access to land near the municipal hall to provide modular housing for homeless people or those at risk of experiencing homelessness.

The land is located just north of Saanich Fire Hall #1 on Vernon Avenue.

It is not known how many modular supportive housing units will be placed on the land.

The district says BC Housing is evaluating the site and surveying work should soon be completed.

In a release, Saanich Chief Administrative Officer Paul Thorkelsson said the district hopes it is moving in the right direction to address housing needs by providing the land to BC Housing.

The district says it is not in a position to fund or develop new housing solutions on its own.

Access to overnight sheltering, with some restrictions, is available in more than 100 Saanich parks from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m.

A hygiene station and storage facility remains open for people seeking overnight shelters, which were set up at municipal hall in July.
