A Saanich man who was arrested Thursday in connection with a shooting in Courtenay is now facing numerous charges.

Richard Daniel Vigneault, 27, has been charged with break and enter, possession of a loaded restricted firearm without authorization, possession of a firearm while prohibited, unauthorized possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and breach of probation.

He was arrested without incident at 5:50 a.m. in a vacant house on Coleman Road in a rural part of Courtenay. The arrest came after police started an investigation into a shooting at a residence in the 5700 block of Highway 19A North in Courtenay. According to police, a 30-year-old man at that property encountered another man and was shot after a “brief interaction.”

The man who was shot was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been flown to a Victoria hospital for further treatment.

Vigneault is still in custody and will make his next court appearance on March 19 in Courtenay.

Const. Rob Gardner, media relations officer with Comox Valley RCMP said the “complex investigation” is ongoing.
