A fire caused significant damage to the roof and back of a house on Walter Avenue in Saanich Thursday.

Saanich firefighters responded to the fire in the 500-block of Walter Avenue at around 12 p.m.

Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Rob Heppell said crews saw smoke and flames coming from one home when they arrived. Approximately 17 firefighters responded.

By 2:30 p.m., crews were working on extinguishing the fire, which had moved to the roof area. By 2:40 p.m., the Saanich Fire Department confirmed the fire was extinguished, and there was extensive fire smoke and water damage to the building and contents.

Rick Hyland, the owner of the house, said he was getting out of bed when he saw some smoke go past his bedroom window.

“I was on my way down when someone started pounding on my door to get out,” he said, adding it was the back part of the house.

Hyland said only one other person lived in the house and everyone got out safely. He did try to use a garden hose to contain the fire but was unsuccessful.

Heppell said no injuries were reported and a fire investigator will be looking into the cause of the fire. According to Heppell, the home is uninhabitable.
