Fire damaged caused at an apartment building after an early-morning blaze along Burnside Rd.

Saanich Fire Department responded to a fire on the second storey of an apartment building in the 400-block of Burnside Road Monday morning.

Crews were called to an apartment fully engulfed by fire just after 6:30 a.m., according to Saanich Fire Chief Dan Wood.

He said the blaze was contained to a single apartment and everyone got out without injuries.

“Damage is extensive to the unit that was burning, and the damage to the rest of the building from water and smoke is to be determined,” said Wood.

He said given the time of day the fire sparked, the department was “fortunate” to receive the notification it did about the fire.

Blackened burn marks and damage could be seen on the exterior of the apartment building.

The cause of the fire remains unkonwn and investigators are looking for a possible cause, Wood said.

The blaze comes as the fire danger rating in Saanich is listed as “extreme,” in line with much of the province.

“It’s tinder-dry,” said Wood. “The grass is dry and I’ve got a few items that people should think about when they’re walking around their properties.”

Those includes cutting the grass, removing dead branches from your property and reporting any fires, big or small, quickly the your local fire department.
