Emergency responders were called to the 4700-block of Cordova Bay Road in Saanich after the driver of a pickup truck collided with a power pole, snapping it in half.

A Saanich resident, 62, was the only occupant of the vehicle, according to Saanich Police.

They say the collision, which happened around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, “could be the result of a medical event.”

Firefighters and paramedics were also called to the scene.

A witness, who captured photos of the aftermath, says the driver of the truck “slammed into a power pole, snapping it in half,” adding, “Not sure about injuries or cause of the incident.”

Police say the driver was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the truck was later towed.

Just after 10 a.m., the witness said the stretch of Cordova Bay Road was closed to traffic, with “no word on how long the road will be closed.”

A CHEK News crew on scene around 10:50 a.m. said the road had reopened.

Following the collision, BC Hydro reported a small outage in the area.

It said seven customers in the 4700-block of Cordova Bay Road and 1100-block of Timber Lane were without power due to a motor vehicle accident. According to its outage list, the power went out at 10:06 a.m., and a hydro crew was on-site.

The outage was later removed from the list around 10:30 a.m.

Police say officers are “still reviewing circumstances about the event.”

CHEK News also reached out to the Saanich Fire Department and BC Emergency Health Services for more information.
