Police are investigating if the crash was caused by a medical or mechanical incident

An elderly couple was killed after a vehicle crash in Saanich this week.

Officers arrived at the scene around 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 6300-block of West Saanich Road in Central Saanich, where the couple’s station wagon had crashed into a ditch, according to Saanich police.

They say the driver died at the scene despite resuscitation efforts, and the passenger was taken to hospital where they later died from their injuries.

Police and fire crews closed the road for seven hours while police worked with collision reconstructionists, according to Saanich PD.

They say the cause is still unknown and are trying to determine why the car went off the road and if it was caused by a mechanical or medical incident.
