Saanich councillor suggests murals on Galloping Goose sound barriers to stop graffiti

WatchGraffiti is popping up along the Galloping Goose and now a Saanich councillor is suggesting murals to put an end to the graffiti.

If you ride the Galloping Goose Trail, you will notice graffiti on the sound barrier walls.

One Saanich councillor says she thinks a way to stop spray paint from popping up is a community-drawn murals.

“I think it’d be great to depict our history. The First Nations, the train, the Garry oak meadow, and then active transportation,” said Judy Brownoff.

The walls are maintained by B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation. Brownoff is hoping whatever funding the ministry has put aside for graffiti removal, instead, they’ll put towards art.

“I think everyone’s aware of it, I think what it comes down to is whose dollar is it going to be?” said Brownoff.

A mural could also draw in tourists, similar to murals seen in Rock Bay and Nanaimo.

Brownoff is hoping to bring the idea to city council this month.
