The District if Saanich is looking to follow in Victoria’s footsteps and impose a ban on single-use plastic bags by the end of next year.

Victoria’s ban came into effect on July 1st, a week later Saanich Council asked staff to provide a timeline and work plan to follow suit.

Council voted unanimously to adopt a plan late Monday night that could see a ban come into effect by December 2019.

The timeline calls for a bylaw to be presented to council in January 2019, that would be followed by several months of consultation with the public, business and stakeholders.

The plan foresees a bylaw being presented to council for final reading in June 2019, with an effective date of six months from the date of adoption.

Once the ban comes into effect, businesses would be given a further six month period, or until June 2020, to use up remaining plastic bag stock.
