Road to Recovery: Nanaimo mayor remains positive amid pandemic

In this edition of Road to Recovery with Douglas Magazine, CHEK’s Kori Sidaway speaks to Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog about housing, the impact of COVID-19, and more.

Krog said while some sectors have recovered since the initial lockdown, the city’s hospitality sector has really struggled.

“In other sectors, we have done quite well. In many respects, our manufacturing and other sectors got back to full swing . . . by the fall,” he said.

Nanaimo’s mayor says despite challenges amid the pandemic, the city continues to attract investment.

“We have worked hard to try and attract investment and investors have come, we have numerous multi-residential units under construction whether it is condos or apartment buildings; more on the way,” he said. “We have actually seen a real uptick this year, already in single-family dwellings, I didn’t think we had that many lots left in Nanaimo to build houses on.”

“It’s actually a really exciting time here in Nanaimo.”

At the end of the day, Krog remains optimistic that the pandemic will pass.

“We are going to get past COVID-19,” he said.
