A retired man living in Courtenay is half a million dollars richer after winning the lottery earlier this month.

According to BCLC, Courtenay’s Greg Brown won a Lotto Max draw on Oct. 13 that earned him winnings of $500,000.

Brown says he uses a deck of cards to select his lottery numbers every week but won the prize money after saying ‘yes’ to the Extra for the Lotta Max draw.

“I’ve been off and on for the Extra over the years, but for whatever reason, I decided to say ‘yes’ this time,” says Brown.

Brown has lived on Vancouver Island for over 20 years and is currently a retiree living in Courtenay. According to BCLC, Brown stands by his deck-of-cards strategy.

“I take a deck of cards and markdown numbers one to 50 with a stencil pen, and I shuffle them and deal them out to pick my numbers,” says Brown. “But I guess it didn’t matter this time when I decided to play the Extra!”

BCLC says that after picking his numbers, Brown used his phone to buy his ticket on PlayNow.com and says he discovered he had won the $500,000 prize while doing some grocery shopping.

“My phone beeped and I got an e-mail saying I had won a prize on PlayNow.com,” says Brown. “When I went home and checked my account and it said $500,000, I thought it was a joke.”

Brown says he intends to continue playing and adds he’s sticking to his deck-of-cards strategy for future draws, hoping it will pay off for an even bigger lottery prize in the future.

“I’ve already shuffled up the cards and have my ticket for the next draw!”

So far in 2020, B.C. lottery players have redeemed more than $26 million in prize-winning Extra tickets, according to BCLC.
