Evacuation orders for several communities in northern Saskatchewan have been lifted after residents were forced to flee due to wildfires.
Those who live in Saulteaux First Nation, La Loche and Clearwater River Dene Nation were told on Sunday they were allowed to return to their homes because the fires have been contained.
“They’re feeling relief and are happy to be home,” La Loche Mayor Georgina Jolibois said on Monday. “Now, hopefully, we don’t have to deal with another situation. Fires are unpredictable, but I’m pleased that people are here.”
Fires near the Saulteaux First Nation had grown to 5,000 hectares and the fires near La Loche and Clearwater River Dene Nation were 266 hectares.
More than 200 people from the communities left their homes last week.
Jolibois said no homes have been severely damaged, though some shacks used for storing goods and equipment have burned down.
“It came very close to burning some houses,” she said. “With quick action, decision-making and sending in resources, properties were saved. There were hardworking people who made sure the fire did not destroy homes.”
She said people began making their way back to the community on Sunday and it’s expected more will return throughout the week.
“The community pulled together and we did a fantastic job,” Jolibois said. “The resources that we got from the province made a huge difference.”
She said crews will continue to monitor hot spots to help prevent another fire from flaring up.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency has said all fires burning in the province are caused by humans and would be investigated.
