A person has died as a result of a coronavirus outbreak at a long-term care facility in Victoria.

Island Health announced Tuesday that a resident at Sunset Lodge died as a result of becoming infected with COVID-19. The health authority also announced that two additional staff members tested positive for the virus following a round of testing on Aug. 30.

“Island Health extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this individual, and to the staff who continue to provide compassionate care through this difficult time,” the health authority said in a statement.

A total of 26 people — 13 staff and 13 residents — at the facility have tested positive for COVID-19 since the outbreak was first declared on Aug. 27.

Sunset Lodge is owned and operated by the Salvation Army and according to their executive director, 100 per cent of residents and 96 per cent of staff members have been fully vaccinated.
