A multi-vehicle crash in Nanaimo Wednesday afternoon. RCMP says two people were taken to hospital, one with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Nanaimo RCMP says two people were taken to hospital, one with serious injuries, after a three-vehicle crash on the Nanaimo Parkway Wednesday.

The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. and police say a southbound Mazda crossed the Highway 19 median south of Northfield Road and struck a northbound Toyota truck, causing the truck to hit a Jeep also going north.

The Mazda caught fire, but RCMP credit a passing motorist for carrying a fire extinguisher and helping to put the fire out quickly.

The driver of the southbound Mazda was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

One of the southbound drivers also went to hospital.

RCMP says it is not known why the southbound vehicle crossed the median and the cause of the crash is under investigation.

The Nanaimo Fire department and BC Ambulance attended the scene and Highway 19 was closed until just before 3 p.m.
