A Courtenay resident, who asked to not be named, took pictures of the police incident near 17th Street bridge in Courtenay.
Comox Valley RCMP is investigating an assault with a weapon on Riverside Trail in Courtenay.
The incident occurred under the 17th Street Bridge on Dec. 7 around 10:30 a.m.
Officers attended the scene and spoke with the victim, who has a serious, non-life-threatening injury to his head.
Police have determined the victim and suspect had an altercation earlier in the day in the lead up to the assault.
Investigators are working to apprehend the suspect after gathering surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses and examining the scene.
