RCMP investigating after five buses damaged in suspicious fire

Five buses were destroyed during a suspicious fire at a bus lot in Duncan early Friday morning, according to North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.

Just after 4 a.m., RCMP and the North Cowichan Fire Department were called to the 1800-block of Tzouhalem Road in Duncan after receiving a report of several buses on fire at the Mid Island Bus lot.

Mid Island Bus said three buses were completely destroyed and the others were damaged by the heat.

Mid Island Bus is a private transportation company that provides pick-up and drop-off school bus services to Queen of Angels School and Duncan Christian School. The morning services were disrupted but the company confirmed the afternoon services went ahead as scheduled. The Cowichan Valley School District loaned a bus to Mid Island bus.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the fire or has information about it is asked to call  North Cowichan Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522 and cite file 2019-566.
