The RCMP and Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia are investigating after a man was shot dead following an alleged hostage situation at a marina in Campbell River.

The BC RCMP say Campbell River RCMP received reports of a homicide at a marina at Discovery Harbour, located in the 2300-block of Spit Road, with additional hostages being held at the scene.

Police, and members of the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiators responded.

“Officers confirmed the safety of the hostages, and made contact with the male suspect,” RCMP says in a release. “Attempts were made to negotiate with the man, who was reported to be in possession of a weapon.”

IIO BC says when officers arrived at the scene, there were no longer any hostages.

A spokesperson for IIO BC told CHEK News that police officers fired shots, and an IIO investigation will determine whether anyone other than police fired shots.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

IIO BC was informed of the incident, and investigators have been deployed to the scene.

This is a developing story. More details will be added as they become available.
