The union representing Victoria International Airport’s (YYJ) food service workers says a new contract has been ratified by an overwhelming margin.

Unite Here Local 40 said Monday it has secured a new contract with Compass Group, the airport’s food service provider.

The union says workers from YYJ’s White Spot, Tim Horton’s, Starbucks and Spinnakers on the Fly will get a 24 per cent raise over the life of the agreement and retroactive bonuses.

Non-tipped workers will reach $15-per-hour wages by June 1.

The new agreement expires in 2020.

The union says the deal includes the first ever pension for YYJ food workers and “critical workload protections” to address concerns of understaffing.

“We can now attract experienced workers to help with the chronic under-staffing and to help our team succeed as our workplace grows,” Spinnakers on the Fly lead cook Mark Atkins said in a release.

The union says it will press the Victoria Airport Authority and the province to address contract flipping at airports and other provincial institutions.

Contract flipping allows unionized workers to be fired as a group by contracted employers and then rehired for less pay and under weaker conditions.

Contract talks between Unite Here Local 40 and Compass Group had been ongoing for more than a year.
