Environment and Climate Change Canada Tuesday afternoon issued rainfall warnings for northern and western Vancouver Island.
According to the weather agency, anywhere from 100 to 150 mm of rain is expected to fall on the west coast of Vancouver Island between Wednesday night through Thursday midday.
Environment Canada says Northern Vancouver Island, especially Port Alice, is expected to see anywhere from 50 to 100 mm rain during the same period.
“The next storm is set to arrive on the west coast Wednesday, with rain becoming heavy in the afternoon. This storm will bring moderate to heavy rain and strong winds. Additionally, freezing levels will rapidly rise above mountain tops, and runoff from snowmelt may contribute to flooding,” the agency said.
Environment Canada also issued a wind warning for northern Vancouver Island, saying that winds could hit 90 km/h on Wednesday.
“A front over the eastern Pacific will rapidly intensify and head toward the B.C. coast Wednesday. Strong southerly winds up to 90 km/h will develop ahead of the front. They will impact the north coast by mid-morning then spread south to the central coast and North Vancouver Island by early afternoon. These very strong, damaging winds will persist Wednesday night,” a statement on the agency’s website reads.
The warnings come a little more than a week after an atmospheric river rolled through British Columbia, causing widespread flooding and mudslides that shut down the provincial highway system into Metro Vancouver.
