Environment Canada is warning of heavy rainfall for two regions of Vancouver Island on Wednesday.

Rainfall warnings are in effect for East Vancouver Island and the Malahat highway area.

In East Vancouver Island, 40 to 50 millimetres of rain is expected to fall between Nanoose Bay and Fanny Bay, according to Environment Canada.

The heavy rainfall is expected to last until late Wednesday afternoon, and may cause localized flooding in low-lying areas.

“Rain will intensify this morning, particularly near Bowser,” reads the warning from Environment Canada.

“If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance.”

While a rainfall warning is in effect for East Vancouver Island on Wednesday, Environment Canada has lifted its snowfall warning for the region, which was issued one day earlier on Tuesday.

Malahat rain and wind

Meanwhile, a rainfall warning is in effect for the Malahat highway region, spanning from Goldstream to Mill Bay.

Environment Canada says up to 50 millimetres of rain could fall on the Malahat throughout the day, and strong wind gusts may also pick up in the afternoon.

The heavy rain should ease to showers Wednesday night, according to the weather office.

“Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions,” says Environment Canada.

“Watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.”

Environment Canada said drivers should also keep an eye out for water pooling on roads and possible flash floods.
