The chief of Langford Fire Rescue is giving credit to quick acting residents and fire crews for limiting the extent of a brush fire that started Monday night near residential property.

Chief Chris Aubrey says all three Langford fire stations responded to a call of a brush fire around 9:15 p.m., which they were able to put out quickly in a densely forested area near Huckleberry Terrace, close to Happy Valley Road.

“If it happened at 10 or 11 o’clock at night and people started going to bed, it’s a pretty secluded area back here, it would have taken some time before someone from the road would have seen this fire,” Aubrey said.

Aubrey said two engines, a brush truck and two other vehicles were on the scene, with 25 personnel battling the blaze.

Although the weather has been hot and dry, the fire was in an area covered by trees which Aubrey says allows fluids to stay in the green foliage, helping to limit the spread of the fire.

Investigators are back at the scene Tuesday trying to determine what caused the blaze and Aubrey says this type of fire is a concern.

“There’s no obvious reason why this fire started. There’s no campfire or anything like that. So why did this fire start? We just want to make sure people are just extra careful this time of year with the forests,” Aubrey said.

“We had a fire in Mill Hill Park about a week and a half ago and it was caused by smoking. Someone was just sitting on the rock and watching the sunset and left a cigarette behind. As the guys were going to go fight that fire, they found another cigarette butt that was still smouldering on the wood chip trail.”

Fire officials in Langford are back Tuesday morning to determine what caused a small brush fire in the Huckleberry Terrace neighbourhood Monday night.

Aubrey says secondary fires were very likely to ignite Monday night if conditions were drier.
