Police arrested a 25-year-old man after the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Parksville was ransacked in early July.

On July 10, Oceanside RCMP were called to a break-and-enter at the church. Victor Blasco, a parishioner, had discovered the damage when he went to do some work in the shed and noticed the front door of the church was open.

Police said the suspect gained access through a side window and it did not appear anything of significance was stolen.

Oceanside RCMP arrested Thomas Dion Bruneau, a Qualicum Beach resident, in connection with the break-and-enter after police found forensic evidence at the scene that identified Bruneau as the suspect.

Bruneau appeared in court and new charges following the arrest include possession of a controlled substance and possession of break and entry tools. He has been released on several conditions and is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 22.
