The B.C. government has announced it is taking full ownership of constructing a new crossing to replace the ageing Pattullo Bridge in Metro Vancouver.

The new bridge, which will cost $1.377-billion, will be operated and maintained by the province.

Premier John Horgan said, “it is time to build a safe, reliable crossing for thousands of daily commuters”.

The project will see a new span built near the existing Pattullo Bridge, network connections in Surrey and New Westminster, and the removal of the existing bridge.

The new bridge will have four wider lanes with a centre barrier and walking and cycling lanes separated from traffic on both sides.

Construction will start in the summer of 2019 and scheduled to open to traffic in 2023.

“This is an essential transportation link that British Columbians rely on, and it’s our job to make sure it’s safe and gets people moving better,” Premier Horgan said.

“Replacing the Pattullo Bridge will help people get home to their families quickly and safely while creating good jobs for local workers.”

The Pattullo Bridge first opened in 1937 and the province says it was designed for a 50-year lifespan.
