B.C. Premier John Horgan is preparing to address the media on Wednesday afternoon amid the recent spike of COVID-19 cases across the province.

Premier Horgan will be making a statement at 1:15 p.m. PT and live streams will be available on both CHEK’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

The re-appointed premier is expected to meet with his newly sworn-in cabinet prior to the address as well.

“The pandemic has turned the lives of British Columbians upside down,” Premier Horgan said last week after announcing his new cabinet.

“We have come a long way together, but we have much further to go. This skilled, diverse team is ready to continue our fight against COVID-19 and build an economic recovery that includes everyone.”

Horgan’s media address comes one day after British Columbia announced 656 new test-positive coronavirus cases, as well as 16 more deaths.

The COVID-19 death rate in British Columbia has been climbing recently, with health officials reporting 99 deaths dating back to last Wednesday.

The total number of deaths in the province over the course of the pandemic has been 457.

Here in the Island Health region, the active number of cases has reached 246, an increase of 10 from Nov. 30. There are currently 60 active cases on southern Vancouver Island, 147 on central Vancouver Island, and 39 on northern Vancouver Island.

Horgan’s afternoon address will be followed by a live COVID-19 update from Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix.

Dr. Henry and Dix are scheduled to speak at 3 p.m. PT. A live stream for this announcement will be available on CHEK’s channels as well.
