BC Hydro said the majority of Vancouver Island customers who have been in the dark since last week’s windstorm now have power and more crews are heading to the Gulf Islands.

About 1,600 customers are still without power, mainly on the Gulf Islands. BC Hydro said there will be about 70 crews working on the Gulf Islands today.

Thursday’s historic windstorm caused extensive damage across the Gulf Islands, toppling trees and damaging power lines. BC Hydro expects all customers will have power by New Year’s Eve.

Here are the estimated restoration times for the Gulf Islands:

  • Pender Island, Dec. 28
  • Thetis Island, Dec. 28
  • Galiano Island, Dec. 29
  • Mayne Island, Dec. 29
  • Saturna Island, Dec. 29
  • Bruce Peak, Dec. 29
  • Salt Spring Island, Dec. 30
  • Parker Island, Dec. 31

The following provincial parks are closed for public safety as crews clean up fallen trees and downed power lines in these areas: Little Qualicum Falls, Englishman River Falls, Montague Harbour Marine, MacMillan, Maquinna Marine, Roberts Memorial and Hemer.
