BC Hydro says it’s working to get the power restored in the Quadra Island and Campbell River areas, where more than 2,700 customers are without electricity.

The hydro company in a notice around 12:30 p.m. Monday says 2,703 customers are without power following the outage that happened at 11:51 a.m.

The cause of the outage is currently under investigation, and the BC Hydro crew is expected to arrive on scene around 1:30 p.m., according to the notice.

A hydro outage map shows the majority of Quadra Island is without power, while a smaller portion of Campbell River, around the downtown area, is also affected.

Ferry cancellations, gale force winds

Meanwhile, BC Ferries has cancelled sailings to and from Quadra Island, including along the Campbell River/Quathiaski Cove (Quadra) route and Whaletown/Heriot Bay (Quadra) route, following a wind warning issued by Environment Canada.

A notice posted to the weather agency’s website at 10:30 a.m. Monday says a gale warning is in effect for the Strait of Georgia north of Nanaimo, where high winds of 34 to 47 knots are occurring or expected to occur in the marine area.

Local Paul Laviolette emailed CHEK News saying, “It’s so windy in Campbell River they had to shut down the Ferry to Quadra Island.”

BC Ferries in the notices says the cancellations will “ensure the safety of our customers and crew” amid the “severe weather forecast for high winds.”
