More than 12,000 without power on Vancouver Island

A little more than 12,000 customers are without power across Vancouver Island.

According to BC Hydro’s website, as of 10:36 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 18), there are 51 outages affecting 6,246 customers in North Island and nine outages affecting 5,774 customers in the South Island.

The outages are widespread, impacting as far north as Sayward and as the Cowichan Valley.

The largest single reported outage is east of Government Street and north of Truck Road in Duncan/North Cowichan, where 2,946 are without power.

Elsewhere, approximately 1,460 customers in Campbell River, 1,013 customers on Gabriola Island, 440 customers in Nanaimo, and 200 in Port Alberni, are also without power. Pockets of Courtenay are also without power.

BC Hydro says the majority of the outages are either under investigation or caused by down wires.

The outages come many communities on Vancouver Island were blasted with another round of winter weather Saturday.
