Thousands of people are without power on northern Vancouver Island following a blast of winter weather.

According to BC Hydro’s website, more than 3,000 customers were without power Sunday morning.

The largest outage is in Alert Bay and Port McNeill area, where some 1,694 customers are in the dark.

Elsewhere, a little over 900 customers in Port Hardy are without power as are 884 customers in Gold River and 43 customers in Zeballos.

The outages come after a blast of winter weather hit the region, dumping more than 10 cm of snow in some places.

The cause for the majority of the outages is not listed on BC Hydro’s website yet — the notable exception being the outage affecting 548 customers in Port Hardy, which the company says is due to trees down across their wires.
