The City of Port Alberni announced on Friday that the Alberni valley Multiplex will re-open on Nov. 29 after a near three-week closure that began Nov. 5.

“We are happy to announce that we are officially back in the ice-making business,” said Tim Pley, City of Port Alberni Chief Administrative Officer in a statement on Friday.

The City says that Technical Safety B.C. lifted its Safety Order and provided the City with a new Certificate of Inspection authorizing reactivation of the Multiplex ice plant as of Nov. 22 at 3:35 p.m.

The plant makes ice for two rinks at the Multiplex, the Weyerhaeuser rink and the Coulson rink. City staff say that the ice-making process is intensive and they will be installing ice on a truncated timeline based on the extended shutdown of the facility.

“The City is targeting Friday, November 29, for the reopening of the Weyerhaeuser rink, and Monday, December 2 for the Coulson rink,” said Willia Thorpe, Director of Parks, Recreation and Heritage. “This expedited timeline should not affect the quality of the ice for the remainder of the 2019-2020 season.”

City staff are working on-site in coordination with Accent Refrigeration to start making the new ice.

The City says that regularly-scheduled programs and events will continue, including Bulldogs’ games.

Port Alberni’s annual Winter Wonderland celebration will continue stating December 3.

“This has been a trying three weeks for our community,” said Pley. “We respect and appreciate Technical Safety BC’s support in helping the City of Port Alberni ensure the safe operation of our community ice plant and look forward to restoring our recreational services at the facility.”
