Police say this suspect allegedly stole a poppy donation can from Delicado’s. (Nanaimo RCMP).

Nanaimo RCMP say at least five poppy donation cans have been stolen from businesses in north Nanaimo.

The poppy cans were stolen from Tim Hortons, McDonald’s, Delicado’s, the Pomme Natural Market and an unknown insurance company. The exact dates of all the thefts is not known to police at this time.

Police are reviewing video surveillance from several of the locations. A still photo of a suspect who allegedly stole a poppy donation can from one of the businesses has been provided to police by a local news agency. That theft occurred on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from Delicado’s located at 6851 Aulds Road.

Const. Gary O’Brien, media relations officer with the Nanaimo RCMP, said these kind of thefts are opportunistic and they expect more in the next couple days leading up to Remembrance Day. Police are recommending businesses who accept poppy donation cans secure them by using zap straps or screws. The cans should also be placed in a visible location and emptied frequently.

Anyone who has information about the thefts is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com or call 1-800-222-8477.
