Ponies, a pet turkey and lots of fair fun at Metchosin Day

WatchThe fair fun continues with Metchosin Day and as Tess van Straaten shows us, there was something for everyone from local art and great eats to ponies and even a pet turkey .

It’s fair day in Metchosin and the animals are out — from ponies and donkeys to guinea pigs, a Burmese Mountain dog, adorable little baby quails, and even a pet turkey.

“I got her on May 4th so I called her Princess Leia and she’s my little baby most of the time,” Princess Leia the turkey’s owner explains.

Hundreds of people came out for Metchosin Day, which is always the first Sunday after Labour Day.

And along with the perennially popular hay rides and music, the fair fun also included wheelbarrow races, trial bike tricks over old cars, and a chance to play cricket and try to defend the wicket.

“It’s really fun, there’s all sorts of different people here doing different things,” excited kids told CHEK News.

“Oh, it’s wonderful,” added another participant. “It’s a unique part of Greater Victoria and to see all the people who volunteer and make it happen is quite a wonderful thing.”

Artisan baked good and farm-fresh produce were also being offered up, along with local art and hand-crafted wares.

“It’s busy, we’ve got perfect weather and so many things going on,” says Pixels and Paint vendor Margaret Goodwin. “It’s great — a real country fair.”
