Police watchdog investigating wellness check incident in Nanaimo

B.C.'s police watchdog is investigating wellness check incident that happened in Nanaimo last month.

The independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia is investigating an incident that involved RCMP officers and a woman in Nanaimo last month.

According to a media release from the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO), on May 26 at around 2:20 p.m. RCMP officers in Nanaimo responded to a call from an individual who was concerned about the safety and wellness of a woman.

When officers arrived at the woman’s residence, they informed her that she was being apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

A physical interaction then occurred and the woman was eventually transported to hospital.

Several days later, the release notes, police learned that the woman had suffered serious injuries and the IIO was notified.

The IIO is asking that any person who saw, heard or recorded the incident to contact their toll free witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
