One cyclist was airlifted to hospital after a crash in Cumberland on June 12, 2019.

Comox Valley RCMP say a bicycle helmet may have saved a cyclist’s life during a crash in Cumberland on Wednesday afternoon.

The mountain biker was struck by a car just after 11 a.m. on the gravel portion of Bevan Road in Cumberland. He suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital in Victoria.

“The helmet being worn by the cyclist may have saved his life,” Const Monika Terragni, Comox Valley RCMP media relations officer, said in a statement.

“This is an unfortunate reminder of the importance of safety equipment when mountain biking.”

Police said the driver, a man from the Comox Valley, remained at the scene and co-operated with investigators.

On Wednesday, a preliminary investigation indicates dusty road conditions may have contributed to the crash. Comox Valley RCMP said its municipal traffic section and an RCMP collision analyst are assisting with the investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Alcohol and drugs have been ruled out as contributing factors.
