The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is investigating a suspicious death in Victoria after a body was found at the S.J. Willis Education Centre.

According to RCMP, shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday, Victoria police were called to the 900 block of Topaz Avenue after a report of a sudden death. Police said out of an abundance of caution, officers cordoned off the area.

Just after 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Victoria police tweeted that they were responding to a report of a deceased person at S.J. Willis school. Investigators were at the scene throughout Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, officers appeared to be digging on the school grounds. Police tape was seen around a grassy area near Topaz Avenue, east of Blanshard Street and north of Hillside Avenue.

Victoria police major crime detectives, the forensic identification section and the crowd management unit search team are all part of the investigation. Officers are still at the scene.

RCMP said it will continue to work with the BC Coroners Service to determine the identity and cause of death. Cpl. Tammy Douglas, spokeswoman for RCMP Island District, said that it is still very early in the investigation and there is nothing to indicate the public is at risk.

The BC Coroners Service said it was aware of a death but added police will provide further comment.
